Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO is set to hit movie theaters in Japan on June 11! We sat down for an interview with Mamoru Miyano, the Japanese voice of new character Gamma 2 in anticipation of the film's premier.
Mr. Miyano is a big fan of the Dragon Ball universe, and we had the chance to ask him about why he's excited for the new movie!
Gamma 2 / Mamoru Miyano
Profile
Born in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Notable voice roles include Prince Demande in Sailor Moon Crystal and Light Yagami in DEATH NOTE. His expressive prowess has also allowed him to succeed as an actor and singer.
Gamma 2
An easy-going Android whose cobalt-blue cape whips about to match his energetic fighting style, the design for Gamma 2 was drawn especially for the film by Akira Toriyama himself!
And thanks to Mr. Miyano's expressive voice acting, the full charm of this new character comes through loud and clear!
——When did you first become aware of Dragon Ball in general?
Miyano: From as far back as I can remember, I have vivid memories of watching reruns of the Dragon Ball anime. I made sure to record the episodes on videotape and watched them over and over. I continued watching the anime when Dragon Ball Z began, and I also started to read the manga chapters as they were released in Weekly Shonen Jump. I went out and bought the stand-alone manga volumes, too! So you can really say that I've been obsessed with Dragon Ball nearly my whole life.
——When you were reading the manga in real time back then, were there any parts of the story that left a big impression on you?
Miyano: The ending of the series was very moving for me. Pan and the reincarnation of Majin Buu, Uub, both made their appearances there. At the time it was sad to think that the manga had really ended.

——What's your all-time favorite scene in Dragon Ball?
Miyano: Oh wow, it's so hard to narrow it down to just one! When I was reading the weekly run of the manga, the part of the story that really had me waiting on the edge of my seat for the next chapter was the Planet Namek Saga. I got chills when Goku first transformed into a Super Saiyan. At the time, my mind raced, thinking, "What happened to Goku?!" I mean, even his personality changes after he transforms!
——You're right! Goku's way of speaking changes after he transforms too. He starts to refer to himself as Ore, which sounds much rougher in Japanese.
Miyano: Exactly! After transforming he doesn't just look cool—it's like he becomes the classic, prototypical hero. It's also perfect that the catalyst for his transformation is the death of his best friend, Krillin. I guess that whole arc of fighting against Frieza is my favorite.

——What was your reaction when you learned that Hiroshi Kamiya would be playing your partner in the film, Gamma 1?
Miyano: I was absolutely thrilled! Mr. Kamiya is like a big brother to me. He's helped me out so much throughout my career. We've had the chance to work together outside of recording too, and we've even traveled together to do events and campaigns for other projects. I look up to him because of his longer career as a voice actor, of course, but more than that, I feel a special kinship with him. So not only was I ecstatic to hear that I was going to be working with him again, but I also felt a sense of security, like I could put my mind at ease since he'd be around.

——You've also worked together on other projects with Miyu Irino, the voice of Gamma 1 and 2's creator, Dr. Hedo, right?
Miyano: Right! I was glad to learn that Miyu would be voicing Dr. Hedo, too. Miyu and Mr. Kamiya's dialogue always sounds super genuine when they act together, so I know I can rest assured that it's going to turn out amazing.

——Did you have the chance to record lines together with Mr. Kamiya and Mr. Irino?
Miyano: If I recall correctly, I finished recording my lines before they even started to record. I ended up improvising a lot in my lines too, so I remember thinking, "This is gonna be tough for Mr. Kamiya to adapt to." (laughs)
——Is there a character who you'd like to fight against as Gamma 2?
Miyano: I wanna spar with Masako Nozawa.
——You want to fight Ms. Nozawa?!
Miyano: That's right! Ms. Nozawa voices not only Goku but Gohan, Goten, and many other characters as well, so choosing her gives me a wide range of opponents I can fight! I don't think that Gamma 2 would win, though... I mean, his only weapon is his ray gun. (laughs)
——For the final question, what message would you like to share with fans all around the world who are waiting for the release of Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO?
Miyano: A message to the whole world?! I'm not sure that I can come up with something on that scale, but I'll do my best!
I am personally honored to be part of the world created by Akira Toriyama, and I think that everyone who watches the film will have a great time experiencing that world once more. Everything from the dialogue, the story revolving around the Red Ribbon Army, and even the movie's subtitle, SUPER HERO, all has that "Dragon Ball" feel that I love so much. This film is jam-packed with Dragon Ball charm, and I hope that everyone enjoys all of its thrills and twists!
——Thank you so much!
The comical yet cool Gamma 2 is overflowing with charisma! We hope you look forward to seeing his heroic exploits at a theater near you!
