The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week we're taking a look at everyone's favorite hybrid Saiyan—it's Gohan from the Frieza Arc!
In order to bring Piccolo back to life after he was killed by Nappa during the Saiyan invasion, Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma head to Namek to gather its Dragon Balls.
(Tale 245)
Not long after touching down, Gohan and Krillin encounter members of the Frieza Force.
Knowing that they're clearly outmatched, the duo hide in wait, but upon seeing the brutality that Frieza's soldiers inflict on the innocent Namekian people in order to steal the Dragon Balls, Gohan flies into a rage, kicking Dodoria square in the face before taking Dende, the sole survivor, and fleeing.
(Tale 255)
Dende tells them of Planet Namek's Saichoro, who upon meeting the warriors, unlocks their potential, leading to a huge increase in power!
(Tale 271)
In an unexpected turn of events, Gohan and Krillin join forces with the Saiyan Prince Vegeta in order to defeat the Ginyu Force, who were called in by Frieza as reinforcements.
Gohan suffers a critical injury and is on death's door during his fight with the ruthless Recoome, but luckily his father, Goku, arrives just in time with a Senzu Bean to save his son.
(Tale 278)
After Goku makes quick work of Recoome, Burter, and Jiece, it's time for him to face Captain Ginyu, and as their battle wears on, Gohan and the others manage to find the Dragon Balls that Frieza and his men had collected.
Dende uses them to summon the mighty dragon Porunga, who brings Piccolo back to life and transports him to Planet Namek.
(Tale 293)
Having seen his best laid plans go to waste, an enraged Frieza steps in to settle the score personally.
The terrifying emperor unveils his second, gargantuan form, and launches a fierce assault that appears to leave Krillin for dead. This enrages Gohan to the point that he manages to temporarily gain the upper hand against Frieza, before ultimately being beaten down.
(Tale 297)
(Tale 298)
Dende uses his healing ability to restore Gohan to full health, but he actually comes back stronger than ever, to the point that he's even able to stand up to Frieza in his third form and drive him back.
(Tale 303)
As the battle rages on, Frieza transforms into his final form and takes on Goku, and when all hope seems lost, Gohan uses his last bit of power to distract Frieza and buy time for his father to gather energy for the Genki-dama.
(Tale 316)
Once Goku fulfills the legend of the Super Saiyan, he orders Gohan to take Piccolo and retreat back to the ship.
Later, a newly revived Shenron sends Gohan and the others from Planet Namek back to Earth.

"Dragon Ball" Tale 197
Gyumao (Grandfather)
Goku (Father)
Chichi (Mother)
He went to Planet Namek looking quite a bit like Piccolo!
Gohan managed to make an outfit for himself to match his master's clothes without getting caught by his mother. It's clear Gohan respects and admires Piccolo every bit as much as his own father.
(Tale 245)
→Preview: Next week's character is Gohan's little brother!
