The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week's showcase is all about Gohan's plucky younger brother, Goten!
Goten is Goku's second child that he left behind before the battle with Cell.
He is able to use a variety of unique fighting techniques, and amazingly was able to achieve the Super Saiyan transformation at the wee age of 7!
He is good friends with Trunks and can frequently be seen play fighting with the similarly aged half-Saiyan.
(From Tale 424)
After training together with his brother Gohan, Goten enters the junior division of the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai tournament.
He wins his first round against Ikose by knocking out his opponent with a single punch and then faces off against Trunks in the finals.
Goten shows unbelievable strength for a boy his age, but ultimately loses by ring out.
(From Tale 435)
After being egged on by Trunks, he agrees to a mischievous scheme: don the mantle of a contestant named Mighty Mask together with Trunks and enter the adult division of the tournament!
In the ensuing battle royal with Android 18, as a petrified Mr. Satan watches, the masked warrior's true identity is revealed after their disguise is ripped open by one of the formidable female warrior's attacks.
(From Tale 437)
Later on, Goten masters the "Fusion" technique under Goku and Piccolo's tutelage.
Using Fusion, Goten and Trunks combine to become Gotenks and head off to defeat Majin Buu. Unfortunately, the fused warrior is too cocky, causing him to be soundly beaten by the ruthless pink menace.
After one more day of practice the two boys succeed in fusing into Gotenks while transformed as Super Saiyans, but the fusion runs out before they can test their strength against Majin Buu.
(From Tale 482)
Goten's mother Chichi is turned into an egg by the evil Majin Buu, who then cruelly stomps on her, killing her in the process. Goten barely manages to suppress his rage and enters the Room of Spirit and Time with Trunks so that they can become strong enough to defeat the newly transformed Majin.
(From Tale 488)
Majin Buu manages to invade the magical room and challenges the boys, but Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks, where an over-the-top battle against the wicked menace ensues!
Gotenks is even able to transform into the Super Saiyan 3 state and is only a breath away from defeating Majin Buu when the fusion suddenly comes undone.
Later on Goten and Trunks are taunted by Majin Buu and just as they turn into Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks to challenge the villain once again, the Majin is able to absorb them along with Piccolo and powers up even more.
(From Tale 493)
Goku and Vegeta manage to rescue their sons, along with the other absorbed warriors, but Majin Buu transforms yet again and then unleashes a vicious attack that destroys Earth and tragically takes Goten's life, along with the lives of Trunks, Gohan and Piccolo.
However, thanks to a wish made to Porunga on New Planet Namek, the Earth is restored and the two boys are brought back to life.
Goten even contributes to the final battle against Majin Buu by giving his energy to the Genki-dama that finally defeats the heartless villain.
(From Tale 514)
10 years pass, and Goten, now with a distinctly different hairstyle, is more interested in dating girls than training.
Finally, at the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai Gotens blasts through the preliminaries, only to find himself facing off against Buu in the first round.

"Dragon Ball" Tale 424
Buku-jutsu (Levitation Technique)
Goten can manipulate his Ki to fly freely through the air.
He quickly masters the art of Ki control while training with Gohan and is soon able to zip around the air like a pro.
(From Tale 428)
Kamekameha
Identical to the Kamehameha, the user focuses Ki into their palms before releasing it in a powerful attack.
In Goten's case, it seems that he misheard the name "Kamehameha" when learning this iconic technique.
(From Tale 434)
Fusion
A technique that Goku learned from the inhabitants of Planet Metamor and then passed on to Goten. When two warriors perform a complicated dance, matching their movements and poses perfectly, it allows them to fuse into a new warrior whose power vastly surpasses the original strength of both warriors individually. In Goten's case, he fuses with Trunks to become Gotenks.
(From Tale 480)
Super Saiyan
The user's hair turns gold, stands straight up and their power drastically increases.
While Goku and Gohan had to struggle to finally achieve this transformation, Goten easily reaches it using only his own natural-born talent.
(From Tale 427)
Son Goku (Father)
Chichi (Mother)
Son Gohan (Brother)
While strong, he's still a bit of a momma's boy!
Since Goku lost his life in the Cell Games and spent his time in the other world, Goten's first face-to-face meeting with his father was at the Tenkaichi Budokai tournament. Overcome by the moment, Goten gets embarrassed and hides behind his mother.
(From Tale 430)
When it is time for Goku to return to the afterlife, Goten wants his father to hug him but is too shy to say so. In the end he gives in and clings to his father, showing that while he has become a powerful fighter he is still a child on the inside.
(From Tale 477)
→ Preview: Next week's character is a powerful foe that emerged before Goten was born!
