A special figure exhibition called TAMASHII NATION 2022 by TAMASHII NATIONS was held in Japan over November 18–20, 2022!
The event featured a massive range of spectacular figures, including the debut appearance of S.H.Figuarts Gohan Beast! In fact, there was so much to cover that we had to split our report into two parts to fit it all in, so let's dive right into Part 1!
Welcome to the Dragon Ball area, where attending fans were greeted by a gigantic Ultimate Gohan statue!! First, let's take a look at some figures from the Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO movie.
Feast your eyes on the beast!! With hair so sharp that it looks like it could punch a hole in the sky, this is the brand-new S.H.Figuarts Gohan Beast figure we mentioned earlier! Apparently, proposals were brought forward during the figure's development to actually reduce the amount of hair, but thanks to the project leader's burning passion and the masterful craftsmanship of the production team, the final product manages to perfectly capture Gohan's hair from the movie.
We were also able to see the first Japanese exhibition of a certain figure that made its debut at New York Comic Con 2022: S.H.Figuarts Orange Piccolo!! You can almost hear the ground cracking apart as it splits under the sheer mass of Piccolo's enormous frame and tree-trunk arms! The production team has done a wonderful job of capturing the sense of pressure we experienced during his appearance in the film, and personally, we think the figure's release date can't come soon enough!!
We heard that the sample models of Gohan Beast and Orange Piccolo shown here also feature some new advancements in articulation and scultping technology. Something about the gaps between the clothing and the area around their chests and shoulders, perhaps...? If you want to know more, be on the lookout for an upcoming article where we'll be combing through the details!!
The exhibit also had all previous SUPER HERO series models out in force!! Seeing them all in one place had us fighting the urge to pick them up and recreate a few scenes from the movie ourselves! And as full as the roster is already, more movie characters are expected to be released in the future too, so watch this space!!
One figure that we were thrilled to get a closer look at was Gohan with his glasses and cape bonus parts that come with S.H.Figuarts Gamma 2! Not only are glasses a bit of a rarity among Dragon Ball characters, but combined with the way the cape is whooshing up from the air pressure like in the movie? Absolute perfection.
Figuarts ZERO is a series that specializes in recreating iconic scenes in the form of mind-blowing figures that are literal works of art! Being that these pieces are purely for show and include no movable parts to obstruct the design, the level of quality and detail in the special effects, coloring, and modelling is simply incomparable.
The figure above is "[Chougekisen] Super Saiyan Trunks -The Second Super Saiyan-", which captures the moment when Trunks dramatically ended Mecha Frieza's reign of terror by slicing him in half! The sense of motion in Trunks' attack, his intense facial expression, the metallic sheen of Mecha Frieza's augmented areas, the wonderfully balanced clear parts—everything about the figure is spectacular!
The cast of the Dragon Ball Z anime were on full display, just as you remember them from the series' opening sequence!! The Trunks figure poised on the yellow platform front and center is "S.H.Figuarts Super Saiyan Trunks -Youth from the Future-", which is finally available for preorder! If you want to know more about it, be sure to check out Part 2 of our TAMASHII NATION 2022 report!
The Vegeta and Yamcha figures pictured above are actually sample models awaiting their official release. Just two more reasons to be excited for the future of S.H.Figuarts!
And finally, here are two more sample models we'd love to add to our collection alongside Vegeta and Yamcha: Android 19 and Android 20! After taking a closer look at the two Androids, the unique designs of their outfits, frames, and faces are actually a great fit for 3D models, don't you think?
The GT section featured Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Vegeta in their Kamehameha and Galick Gun poses!! Getting these kinds of poses with the arms outstretched in front of a figure's chest was difficult with older posable figures, but Goku and Vegeta look more natural than ever here thanks to some powered up articulation around their shoulders!
S.H.Figuarts continues to evolve and advance the world of figures, and seeing so many awesome sample pieces on display at this event has not only made us even more excited for their full releases, but it also allowed us to experience for ourselves the progress being made and glimpse the trajectory the series' future!
Check the related articles below for Part 2 of our report, where we'll give you the rundown on preorders that commenced with the event and introduce three new S.H.Figuarts figures!!
