A special fan meeting event was held to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the app game Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle on January 21 at the Otemachi Mitsui Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
300 Dokkan Battle players won spots to join the fan meeting through a random lottery event. This incredible, first-of-its-kind event offered a variety of unique experiences for attendees, such as a game area, a challenge event where you could try to beat the clear time of Dokkan's very own producer, and more.
A livestream of the event was also available to watch, but only a selection of the stage events held at the venue were covered.
In this report, we'll give you the lowdown on everything that took place on the day of the fan meeting!
The fan meeting took place over two areas of the venue: the hall, where the stage and seating was located, and the lobby, an open space where the event booths were. When we visited the lobby at 1pm, staff were busily preparing special booths for the event.
In the center of the lobby were a series round tables, each featuring a special Dokkan Battle-themed design! Attendees could use these to play games, respond to surveys, or just relax and interact with other fans. Around this area were game areas, photo spots, and booths as far as the eye could see!
Each table had a different design. There were 9 variations in total, each featuring fan favorite characters, like Goku, Majin Vegeta, and Cell.
There was also an awesome game area where you could experience the thrills of Dokkan Battle in a real-life Ki Sphere-throwing showdown!
Challengers had three chances to throw a ball, and if they managed to get the ball into the hoop with the type advantage even once, they would be deemed the victor!
The Puzzle Buster Battle! Solve the 8 puzzles located throughout the event venue to discover the secret password, but beware: this is no easy mission!
Next up is the Challenge Corner! Here attendees could try out a time attack challenge called the Ultimate Speed Battle!
Challengers who managed to beat the clear time of Dokkan Battle's producer, Omatsu, could receive some special novelty items. The kicker is that Omatsu has been playing Dokkan Battle even before he became the producer of the game, so he's no pushover! Could a fan really be able to beat the expert producer's score?!
The Challenge Corner booth featured a ranking panel that would display the names and clear times of the top 30 challengers.
There was even a charging station available to provide fatigued smartphones with a power boost after visiting the Challenge Corner!
The fan meeting officially kicked off at 3 pm. You could see the line of waiting fans grow longer and longer as the start time approached.
Let the 8th Anniversary Fan Meeting commence!
Fans could each pick up a bottle of their very own Ultimate Recovery Drink at the information counter.
The contents of this mystery beverage was just mineral water, but it surely helped fatigued Dokkan-istas to replenish their strength!
One by one, fans stepped up to challenge Omatsu's clear time. The ranking panel continued to be updated with new top times.
In addition, the extremely challenging Puzzle Buster Battle continued to bewilder attendees! Even these two rank 800+ players found themselves stumped by the puzzles.
In the end, it took about an hour and a half for one of the fans to finally solve all the puzzles and emerge victorious.
Returning to the game area, players who cleared the throwing challenge received some awesome novelty items! Anyone who tried the challenge picked up a special sticker, but those dedicated few that managed to clear the trial earned themselves a fancy original poster!
Chucking Ki Spheres might sound simple at first, but they're small and surprisingly hard to control!
The community corner, packed with fans attempting the puzzle solving and time attack challenges.
The venue and online arena both featured a photo spot where fans could take a commemorative photo with Goku himself!
Both the offline and online versions of the fan meeting also featured a poll corner. Dokkan Battle fans answered tough questions, like "What do you keep in mind when facing a powerful foe?" and "What moments in Dokkan Battle really make you glad to be a fan?"
The special stage event to celebrate Dokkan Battle's 8th anniversary kicked off at 5 pm. Dokkan Battle's main producer Omatsu and special guest Yuki Iwai from the comedy duo Haraichi helped to look back on 8 awesome Dokkan Battle filled years.
And of course, there was info about campaigns for the 8th anniversary!
For starters, there was info about the Dual Dokkan Festival for the first half of the anniversary campaign. The new characters "Super Saiyan 3 Goku & Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta" and "Goku (GT) & Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta" were also confirmed for release.
The Dokkan Battle 8th Anniversary Celebration Live Broadcast aired on January 29, but you can check out the archived version to see the animations for the new characters and other details!
(Archived version available until February 28, 2023.)
There was also a question and request corner where Producer Omatsu responded to questions gathered from players before the event.
Iwai was amazed, saying things like ,"Wow, I can't believe you answered that here!" and "The fans are hanging on your every word!"
Although Omatsu initially stated that there were some things he couldn't make promises about, he addressed players' questions to the best of his ability, even if the answer was simply, "We have no plans for that right now."
The main theme for the 8th anniversary is "Genki-dama", specifically the Super Genki-dama used in Dragon Ball Z's Majin Buu arc and the Super Ultra Genki-dama used in Dragon Ball GT's Shadow Dragon arc.
New character skills that allow players to fully experience the dramatic atmosphere when unleashing these iconic attacks were also revealed at the event.
After the broadcast ended, an exclusive BGM quiz tournament was held at the event venue!
Event attendees competed to answer quiz questions about the heart-pumping BGM that helps make Dokkan Battle so much fun. The anime song specialist DJ Caesar kept the Dokkan Battle tunes pumping in this first-ever, mega-cool BGM quiz tournament.
There were 15 quiz question in total, starting at intermediate difficulty and gradually ramping up the challenge level. At the midway point, there were 29 fans who had been able to answer each and every question correctly. You could truly feel the fiery enthusiasm the fans had for Dokkan Battle at this event!
There were even tricky questions that required attendees to listen to 3 songs in rapid succession before trying to answer which song wasn't included in the medley.
DJ Caesar seamlessly melded the 3 songs together as though they were all part of a single track! Fans had to listen very carefully to have any chance of answering the questions correctly!
Fans could answer questions directly from their smartphones by scanning the 2D code from the response page in advance.
One of the questions even had fans try to answer when the song was added to the game.
The stage program in the second half of the event was optional, but tons of fans still stayed for the challenge. The venue was illuminated by the glowing wrist bands given out at time of admission.
After all the questions had been answered, DJ Caesar gave a special musical performance!
There was an award ceremony for the winner of the Challenge Corner after the end of the BGM quiz. The highest-ranked player managed an amazing time of 2 minutes, 25.3 seconds!!
Producer Omatsu personally presented the champion with a golden Hercule Statue trophy.
