The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week, we're meeting the mysterious attendant Whis from the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods!
Whis is the attendant of Universe 7's God of Destruction, Beerus.
He has a somewhat peculiar air about him and seems to be unphased by most things, except perhaps when it comes to delicious food, which he absolutely adores.
Always attentive to his duties, Whis promptly wakes Beerus from his 39-year-long slumber when he was having trouble rising and shining at the scheduled time and gives him a report of what had happened throughout the universe in the interim.
Beerus is shocked to learn that Frieza had been taken down while he was hibernating, and so Whis uses his staff to show him the battle that had taken place between the galactic emperor and the one who defeated him: a Saiyan known as both "Goku" and "Kakarot".
Coincidently, Beerus had had a precognitive dream during his slumber that suggested he would fight against a "Super Saiyan God", and so his first order of business was to find this remnant of the Saiyan race and verify what he had seen in his premonition.
Together, Whis and Beerus streak across space at blinding speeds to find Goku at the Planet of the Kaio.
Of course, Goku had never even heard of a Super Saiyan God, and so the two leave him to go and find Vegeta on Earth instead.
Things then take a tense yet comical turn when Whis and Beerus find themselves taking part in Bulma's birthday party on a cruise ship and enjoying delicious Earthling delicacies such as takoyaki and pudding.
Eventually, Goku is able to transform into his Super Saiyan God form with the help of Vegeta, Gohan, and the others and begins his duel with Lord Beerus.
As an earth-shaking battle unfolds between Goku and Beerus, Whis can be seen on the sidelines treating himself to a yummy parfait.
Even though Goku loses to Lord Beerus in the end, Whis was impressed by his astonishing strength and even asks him if he'd be interested in becoming the next God of Destruction should Beerus ever die.
Goku turns him down, of course, much to Whis' disappointment.
Another surprise for Whis was that Beerus had apparently been forced to use seventy percent of his full power to win against Goku, which is apparently a very rare occurrence.
After all is said and done, the two return to Beerus' Planet with some take-out sushi from Earth.
Beerus gets his first taste of wasabi and begins to spiral out of control due to its spiciness, but Whis is able to step in and subdue the planet-destroying God of Destruction with a single karate chop, revealing that the mild-mannered attendant is far stronger that he seems.

Whis is not only Beerus' attendant, but his martial arts master too!
Beerus remarks that in all the great many battles he's fought over the years, Goku is his second toughest opponent.
As it turns out, his number one opponent—the one who would go on to become his master in the ways of combat—was Whis!
→Preview: Next week's character is Whis' younger brother!
