The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week, we're blasting off into space to learn about Merus from Dragon Ball Super's Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc!
Merus is a young man who protects the galaxy as part of the Galactic Patrol.
He is an elite patrolman whose abilities are so incredible that he has been placed in charge of 104 districts. When "Planet-Eater" Moro escapes the Galactic Prison, Merus tries to enlist the help of Majin Buu to capture the wizard, but is mistaken for a kidnapper in the process.
Merus incapacitates Goku and Vegeta when they come to rescue their potund pink pal and takes the two Saiyans to the Galactic Patrol HQ so he can explain the situation. The patrolman then asks for Goku and Vegeta's help in his quest.
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 42)
Moro heads to New Planet Namek in search of the Dragon Balls, but Merus manages to temporarily capture the outlaw using some incredible moves of his own. Despite Majin Buu's assistance Moro somehow manages to escape and gets wish to the Dragon Balls granted, which restores the evil wizard to his prime.
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 47)
In order to defeat Moro, Merus agrees to train Goku.
The two enter the Room of Spirit and Time, and Merus tries to help Goku perfect the divine technique known as "Ultra Instinct".
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 52)
During their final sparring session the two warriors decide to go all out, and Whis arrives and reveals that Merus is actually an Angel.
Angels are not allowed to fight in real battles, and so Merus is forced to abandon his plan to go fight Moro together with Goku.
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 55)
Goku bets everything on staying in his Ultra Instinct: Ultra Instinct -Sign- transformation for as long as possible to fight Moro, but the wizard proves to be far more powerful than even Merus had predicted.
As Merus watches Moro use his copy ability to corner Goku, he curses his inability to help his Saiyan comrade perfect his Ultra Instinct transformation.
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 60)
Merus is able to head to Goku's location thanks to Beerus and Whis. Although Angels are meant to remain neutral to good and evil, Merus ended up acquiring a sense of justice after joining the Galactic Patrol and spending time with Goku. Merus decides to break Angel Law in order to fight Moro, and even manages to seal off Moro's copy ability with his incredible divine powers. However, because he used his true powers too much, Merus ultimately ceases to exist…
(Dragon Ball Super Chapter 63)
Goku is so inspired by Merus' sacrifice that he is finally able to perfect Ultra Instinct and defeat Moro.
