The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week, we're taking a closer look at the stoic defender of Universe 11, Jiren, from Dragon Ball Super's Universe Survival Arc!
Jiren is the ace member of the Pride Troopers, an elite squad of individuals who work to protect Universe 11 from evildoers.
Strongly influenced by his late master's teachings, he has devoted himself entirely to the ideal of absolute justice.
He boasts absolutely overwhelming strength that surpasses even that of the God of Destruction of Universe 11, Belmod.
He initially refuses the invitation to join the Tournament of Power because it would prevent him from focusing on maintaining the peace within his home universe, but he finally agrees to take part when he learns that the victor will receive the Super Dragon Balls as a prize.
Just what could this mighty warrior want to wish for...?

When Goku tries to say hi at the start of the Tournament of Power, Jiren nonchalantly tells him to get lost as he doesn't want to waste any energy.
Jiren proves that his strength is on a totally different level when he sends Goku flying with just one hand, even after he'd transformed into his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form!

Even Goku's Kamehameha has no effect on the imposing grey warrior, who promptly counters with a flurry of powerful punches that push Goku all the way to the edge of the arena.

Hit, the legendary assassin from Universe 2, also jumps in to take on Jiren and unleashes his incredibly powerful Time Lag technique.
However, the elite Pride Trooper easily breaks out and delivers a devastating uppercut that sends Hit careening out of bounds.
Even more shocking is that Jiren managed to dominate both Goku and Hit while holding back his true power to conserve his stamina!
("Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 35)
Jiren also shrugs off Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku's trump card, the Kaio-ken, before knocking Kamesennin out of the arena with a simple chop.
Next, Vegeta breaks past the limits of the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan transformation and even manages to land some dazzling hits on Universe 11's defender. Jiren responds by saying that although the Saiyan prince's attacks are the best he's experienced thus far, he still has no chance at victory, before countering with a fierce strike of his own.
("Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 40)
Jiren also appears indifferent at times, such as when he refuses to save an ally in need because he can handle any opponent by himself. His terrifying strength is undeniable, however, as Golden Frieza and Android 17 both discover when they challenge Jiren themselves. In desperation, Android 17 even uses his self-destruct technique, but not even this can deal damage to the grey titan.
("Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 40)
Just when everything seems hopeless, Goku breaks through his limits and transforms into Ultra Instinct -Sign-, which finally forces Jiren to start fighting seriously. Things shift in the favor of Universe 7 when Goku awakens into the true Ultra Instinct form and lands an incredible punch to Jiren's midsection.
("Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 41)
As the battle continues, Goku and Vegeta team up and launch a full-power Kamehameha and Gamma Burst Flash, but Jiren neutralizes even these incredible attacks and then knocks Vegeta off of the tournament stage.
("Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 42)
Just when Jiren is about to knock Goku out of the arena as well, Frieza unleashes a powerful tackle on the weakened Pride Trooper that eliminates both him and Goku from the tournament.

"Dragon Ball Super" Chapter 30
Jiren's wish was to resurrect his fallen mentor!
Jiren joined the Tournament of Power so that he could revive his master Gicchin, who was slain by a demon, with the Super Dragon Balls.
Unable to receive recognition from Gicchin as his successor before he passed away, Jiren wanted to resurrect him to show him the incredible power he had gained.
