The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This time, we're swinging back around to our hero, Goku, as he appeared in the Red Ribbon Army arc!
After the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai came to a close, Goku set off on a journey to reclaim Grandpa Gohan's Four-Star Dragon Ball.
Little did he know, he'd have to contend for control over the Dragon Balls against the villainous Red Ribbon Army, who sought nothing short of world domination!
Goku manages to secure the Six-Star Dragon Ball early on in his quest and even nonchalantly disposes of the Red Ribbon Army's Colonel Silver, who attempted to steal it from him, before moving on to his next objective.
(Tale 55)
Later, Goku is almost frozen solid by the frigid climate to the north but is luckily saved by Suno from Jingle Village.
To show his thanks, Goku promises to take down the Red Ribbon Army's White Company, who had been forcing the villagers to search for the Dragon Balls and mounts an attack on their base, the Muscle Tower.
(Tale 57)
There, he defeats White Company officers Major Metallic and Sergeant Murasaki along with his brothers, who guard the floors of Muscle Tower, and also meets the kind-hearted Android 8, who helps him to overcome the monstrous Buyon.
(Tale 58)
(Tale 63)
(Tale 65)
Goku eventually reaches the top floor, where he faces General White.
White shoots Goku during their standoff, which causes Android 8 to explode with anger and intervene, bringing the general down himself.
In the end, Goku is even able to obtain the Two-Star Dragon Ball from his new Android friend, who turned out to be holding it the whole time!
(Tale 66)
While Goku is en route to his next objective, his Dragon Radar is broken, which causes him to take a detour to Capsule Corporation headquarters at West City.
There, he has Bulma repair the Dragon Radar, and the two set off together to find the remaining Dragon Balls.
(Tale 69)
Together, they manage to determine that a Dragon Ball is located underwater, so they travel to see Kamesennin with the hope of borrowing his submarine.
At Kame House, Goku and Bulma recruit Krillin to their questing party, and the three dive to an underwater cavern in search of the Dragon Ball.
Easier said than done, it would seem, as the cavern contained multiple threats keeping the three from reaching its deepest recesses, including a pirate robot and a giant octopus!
To make matters worse, General Blue shows up and is almost able to defeat Goku using his psychic powers, but in the end the heroes are able to escape the collapsing cave with the Three-Star Dragon Ball safely in hand.
(Tale 75)
(Tale 76)
(Tale 77)
However, once they reach the surface and return to Kamesennin, they're ambushed by General Blue, who steals their hard-earned Dragon Balls!
(Tale 81)
Goku gives chase and pursues General Blue all the way to Penguin Village.
There, he enlists the help of a robot girl named Arale Norimaki, who helps him to get the Dragon Ball back safe and sound.
(Tale 82)
Goku then travels to Karin Sanctuary as his next destination.
As it turns out, the area was under attack by Colonel Yellow, and Goku arrives just in time to rescue Upa from a hostage situation!
To show his gratitude, Upa's father, Bora, gives Goku his long-lost Four-Star Dragon Ball.
(Tale 85)
Desiring to take Goku out of the picture once and for all, the Red Ribbon Army hires Taopaipai, the world's deadliest assassin, who ends up killing Bora upon arriving at Karin Sanctuary.
In their ensuing clash, the assassin lives up to his reputation and defeats Goku with his signature move, the Dodonpa—or so it would seem, as the Four-Star Dragon Ball Goku was holding had actually absorbed enough of the force of Taopaipai's Dodonpa to save his life!
(Tale 86)
Determined to close the difference in power between himself and Taopaipai, Goku climbs Karin Tower to obtain the Super Holy Water, a substance said to be able multiply the power of those who drink it!
Goku does manage to increase his power many times over, but it isn't because he drank the Super Holy Water—it was the result of the vigorous training he had undergone in order to obtain it from Master Karin in the first place!
(Tale 87)
(Tale 88)
When Taopaipai shows his face at Karin Sanctuary again, Goku soundly defeats him with his incredible newfound power.
Next, he sets off to the Red Ribbon Army Headquarters to reclaim his stolen Dragon Balls.
(Tale 92)
Try as the soldiers of the evil army might to stop his progress, Goku takes them down one by one until he reaches not Commander Red but Officer Black, who had recently usurped him after learning of the true reason behind the army's bid for the Dragon Balls. In the end, Goku takes down Officer Black, toppling the entirety of the Red Ribbon Army all by himself!
(Tale 96)
With one last Dragon Ball left to find, Goku and the others travel to the palace of Uranai Baba, who is said to have the ability to divine the location of anything you desire—for a price.
(Tale 98)
With no money to pay, Goku agrees to fight in a martial arts tournament against Uranai Baba's team of specially selected fighters alongside Upa, Krillin, and Yamcha.
Yamcha tastes bitter defeat against Miira Kun, but Goku is able to overcome the bandaged baddie with ease and moves on to the next warrior, Akkuman, whose powerful Beam of Evil attack can make even the tiniest drop of evil in his opponent's heart expand until they explode! Of course, the move has no effect on Goku thanks to his pure heart, and the Saiyan defeats him with a powerful kick that sends him crashing through the arena walls.
(Tale 103)
(Tale 104)
In the last round, Goku faces the fifth and final fighter of Uranai Baba's team, a mysterious masked man.
The fierce battle between them rages back and forth with neither side giving an inch until the masked man exploits Goku's weakness by grabbing him by the tail!
(Tale 107)
Luckily, Goku's tail snaps right off, allowing him to launch a counterattack!
His enigmatic opponent promptly forfeits, and as it turns out, the masked man is none other than Goku's beloved late guardian and mentor, Grandpa Gohan!
(Tale 108)
With Goku and his friends having won the tournament, Uranai Baba gazes into her crystal ball to divine the Dragon Ball as agreed and sees a vehicle that Goku sets off to track down. The car turns out to belong to the Pilaf Gang trio, who were secretly carrying the seventh Dragon Ball. Goku ends up in a scuffle with the gang in their combined Pilaf Machine, who knowing Goku's weakness, work together to attempt to grab him by the tail, but it'd already been snapped off during his fight against Grandpa Gohan!
(Tale 110)
After defeating the Pilaf Machine and obtaining the gang's One-Star Dragon Ball, Goku returns to Karin Sanctuary with Upa, where he uses the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron and wish Bora back to life.
(Tale 112)
"Dragon Ball" Tale 1
Kamehameha
The signature technique of Kame School martial arts, where the user concentrates energy into the palms of their hands to unleash it as a single, powerful blast.
Goku used this move to defeat Major Metallic, the giant octopus, the Red Ribbon Army's Fighter Planes, and the Pilaf Machine, and it also played a key part in closing out his match against Grandpa Gohan at Uranai Baba's Palace.
As a side note, the Kamehameha was ineffective against Taopaipai.
Goku even used the Kamehameha as a form of propulsion to escape the underwater cave!
Zanzo-Ken (Afterimage)
Goku used the Zanzo-Ken to defeat the Murasaki quintuplets in Muscle Tower and later to evade Grandpa Gohan's Kamehameha at Uranai Baba's Palace!
Jan-Ken (Rock, Scissors, Paper)
Goku used the "Rock" version of this technique to defeat Sergeant Murasaki, the pirate robot, and General Blue.
21st Tournament: Second Place
Grandpa Gohan
Goku caught one of the scattering Dragon Balls bare-handed!!
After summoning Shenron and making a wish with the Dragon Balls, they scatter off in all directions around the world, becoming regular old rocks for a period of one year. One time, Goku was able to lock on to Grandpa Gohan's Four-Star Dragon Ball right before it shot off to who knows where and swiftly leap up to catch it! Leave it to Goku to try something as novel as bending the rules by catching a Dragon Ball before they fly away, but you certainly can't help but be amazed by the speed and dexterity that allowed him to actually pull it off!
(Tale 112)
→Preview: Next week's character is someone who looks just like Goku!
