The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This week we're visited by a longtime friend of Kamesennin, Umigame!
Umigame is a turtle that lives together with Kamesennin at Kame House.
He has a polite demeanor and can frequently be seen reprimanding his housemate for his rowdy behavior.
Umigame ventured into the mountains in search for some delicious mushrooms, but got separated from his companion and ended up wandering in search of the ocean for about a year.
(Tale 3)
Umigame meets Goku and the lad helps him return to the ocean.
Along the way they run into the ravenous Bandit Bear and it seemed like Umigame might end up on the menu, but Goku jumped in and protected his new friend from danger.
(Tale 3)
Upon reaching the ocean, Umigame calls upon Kamesennin to reward Goku for his good deed. This is how Goku ends up with his trusty riding cloud, Kintoun.
(Tale 3)
Later on, Goku and Chichi come to Kame House to ask Kamesennin to lend the Bashosen fan to them so they can extinguish the fire raging at Fry-pan Mountain.
Umigame chips in to help Kamesennin remember where it is, saying "If I'm not mistaken, you were using it as a potholder, sir.". It's just a short exchange, but it shows you how close the two are!
(Tale 13)
Goku returns again later in the story to borrow a submarine for his search for the Dragon Balls. Goku shows that remembering names is not his strong suit and mistakenly calls the kindly turtle "Urigome".
(Tale 71)
When the Red Ribbon Army comes to attack Kame House, Umigame thinks fast and gets Lunch to sneeze so she can unleash her transformed rage upon the wicked goons.
(Tale 73)
Further on in the story, Umigame was deeply shocked when Great Demon King Piccolo murdered Kamesennin, and cried tears of joy when his friend was resurrected using the Dragon Balls.
(Tale 152)
(Tale 165)
"Dragon Ball" Tale 3
He's a calm, collected turtle with sharp instincts!
When Goku goes to tackle the Red Ribbon Army Headquarters head-on, Bulma is frantic to get in contact with Yamcha by telephone. The young inventor goes into a panic because there's no phone at Kame House, but Umigame calms Bulma and reminds her of her technical prowess by saying "But ma'am, if you could build that... then surely something as simple as a telephone shouldn't be...?"
(Tale 93)
Umigame even comes close to discovering the true identity of Jackie Chun at the Tenkaichi Budokai, going as far as to say "That fellow does remind one of our Kamesennin, wouldn't you say?"
(Tale 119)
