It's been one year since the online action game, DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS made its debut. Season 4 of the game launched on November 1st to celebrate this incredible milestone.
To mark this special occasion, we decided to interview the producer! We got his thoughts on reaching the 1st anniversary, and details about the ongoing 1st Anniversary Campaign and Season 4!
Kotani, the producer of DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS
―What do you think about DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS reaching its first anniversary?
Kotani: I sincerely believe that we were only able to reach it thanks to support from all the players!
Dragon Ball games up to this point had always been centered around 1v1 or a clash between two powerful entities. But DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS was the first Dragon Ball action game featuring 1v7 gameplay. And as for us at Bandai Namco Entertainment, there were a lot of areas that presented first-time challenges, and there were a lot of headaches overall. But all of your kind comments, opinions, and requests have allowed us to make it to one year on the market!
―Please tell us some of the highlights of the ongoing 1st Anniversary campaigns.
Kotani: First off, as a thanks to all players, we're giving out a total of 50 Summon Tickets as a gift to kick off the season!
On top of that, if you include Anniversary Events and Dragon Tier rewards you'll be able to get up to over 100 Tickets, no matter when you started playing!
I recommend that particularly new players use these tickets on the 1st Anniversary Spirit Siphon and the Premium 1st Anniversary Spirit Siphon as they have lineups that will take care of all your concerns you may have about being able to keep up with longtime players.
(1st Anniversary Spirit Siphon)
A Summon where it's easy to get popular skills with high usage rates.
(1st Anniversary Ticket)
A ticket needed to play the 1st Anniversary Spirit Siphon.
In addition to the 10 tickets you'll receive by logging in the first time during Season 4,
you can get more through various Event rewards and special gifts for 5 straight weekends!
Kotani: This season is fun for players that have continued to play since launch, as well as players jumping in for the first time or may have taken a break from playing for a while. We would love for everyone to check it out!
―What are your favorite skills available in the 1st Anniversary Spirit Siphon lineup?
Kotani: The first is one that had only been available as a pre-order bonus until now, Android 18's Wall Kick! It's a skill that I personally have really put to good use, and the 1st Anniversary is a great chance to get it into the hands of a bunch more people. So, we added it to the lineup.
(Wall Kick)
A skill that allows you to jump by kicking from a wall.
It allows for quick three-dimensional movement and is also useful for exploration.
Kotani: And next, I'm personally a fan of the Flying Nimbus. It really is a quintessential Dragon Ball mode of transport, and it looks hilarious when you use it to run away. But it does stand out and make you easily found by a Raider (laughs).
(Flying Nimbus)
Kotani: Due to how gameplay works in this game, there are many skills that can be used to run away like "it stands out but will take you far" or "it has short range but moves fast", each with their own characteristics. The Anniversary Summon I mentioned earlier has a number of these skills, so try searching for the one that works best for you!
―Can you tell us more about the new costumes you can get from the Anniversary Tier - Goku - Event's rewards?
Kotani: First up is the Golden Goku's Turtle Hermit Gi!
Goku's Turtle Hermit Gi (Turtle Symbol 1)
(1st Anniversary Ver.)
Kotani: We touched on this during the livestream on October 28th, but this costume has an extremely flashy and shiny golden design! Although, there is the downside that it makes it easier for Raiders to see you (laughs)! But since it's the first anniversary festival, I think it would be fun to try out an extra flashy outfit for a change!
Kotani: Also, we've prepared over 20 new costumes to celebrate this anniversary. Many players design their avatars with the perspective of "if I entered the world of Dragon Ball". With all the avatar design choices you can make, outfits are one of the more important means of self-expression, so even though the t-shirt logo may be the same, you can choose a color that is different from the other avatars around you.
(1st Anniversary T-shirt)
Kotani: Outfits are decided during meetings between our development team and the development company, and since they don't really affect game balance its a fun place to come up with a bunch of wacky ideas.
In the future, I would like us to continue making T-shirts with famous quotes, or other outfits based on real Dragon Ball merch. With a good sense of fun, of course.
―Could you tell us a bit more about Season 4's new Raider, Broly?
Kotani: As Dragon Ball Super: Broly was not only a popular movie in Japan but overseas as well, we've received many requests to add Broly to the game from fans.
One of the special things about Broly in this game is that he is a "Super-Aggressive" Raider that starts at Stage 2! Broly has immense power, but given his compassionate nature, it is unlikely he would willingly attack Survivors or civilians. However, after his rage sparked in his battle against Goku and Vegeta, he got caught up in a time rift and sent to the world of THE BREAKERS. As a result, Broly starts the game in an extra strong state, and Survivors will have an even more reasons to run and hide in this heart pounding action!
Stage 2 Broly (Rage)
Stage 3 Broly (Super Saiyan)
Stage 4 Broly (Full Power Super Saiyan)
Kotani: Moreover, once Broly reaches Stage 4's Full Power Super Saiyan, he can destroy an area at an ultra-high speed twice. Although Broly is already incredibly strong, as his level grows, he can relentlessly track down Survivors. I'm sure you're all wondering, "How will Survivors be a match against such a strong Broly?" But don't worry, we've prepared some new things for Survivors, too.
―How will Survivors face off against Broly?
Kotani: We've introduced a new gimmick, the Super Transphere! This special item will only appear when the Raider is Broly. When activated, you can transform into Goku, Vegeta, or Gogeta, and fight Broly just like in the movie!
Broly himself also has an Evolution Gauge that increases through battles with players who have been transformed by the super transphere, so throughout the match you’ll be able to feel all the excitement from the movie!
―Do you have a favorite scene from Dragon Ball Super: Broly?
Kotani: My favorite is the battle scene between Gogeta and Broly of course! It felt like it was battle scene after battle scene during the entire 100 minute movie, but that final battle was something else. It really had THE Dragon Ball feel to it.
―You could really feel all the excitement from the movie again in the new Breakers trailer.
Kotani: Yes, the Season 4 trailer also reflects how much I love that Gogeta vs. Broly scene, just as they're cornered and can’t take it anymore, Gogeta appears! We decided to showcase a fierce battle between Gogeta and Broly at the end. We also included Broly splitting time and space.
Kotani: The first thing we discussed with the development team about the inclusion of Broly in Season 4 was what kind of game system would be best to implement to recreate the feel of that iconic Gogeta vs. Broly battle in DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS. This became the main concept behind Season 4.
The entire battle team was very particular about recreating the intensity of the never-ending battles from the movie. The battle grows even more intense with the thrill of using the Super Transphere ball to help your fellow Survivors survive. The result of all these efforts is an experience unique to DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS. Be sure to check it out!
―Thank you so much!
Also, "Lemo", "Cheelai", "Bulma (Snow Gear)", and characters from Dragon Ball Super: Broly will appear as new Survivor skins. And that's not all! The Survivor skin Mr. Satan will be available as a Dragon Tier reward!
In addition to improvements to make the game easier to play such as "reset skill points", "increased raider custom voice slots", and more, there are some large-scale updates like implementing a rank system!
Additionally, DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS will be available for free through PlayStation®Plus from November 7 to December 4. If you have a PlayStation®5 or PlayStation®4, be sure to download it!
In [Part 2], we hear more stories from past Seasons of DRAGON BALL: THE BREAKERS, including development plans and a look back on Seasons 1-3.
Mr.Kotani also shared some things about what's in store for the future, so don't miss the next part!
