Toyotarou's Thoughts on ULTRA Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku!

—Have you played Dragon Ball Legends, the game that held the collaboration event?

Yes! I don't have a lot of free time at the moment, but I'd like to play it a lot more in the future!


—Please tell us the points you focused on for this illustration.

I wanted to give off a more serious feeling than anime-style coloring, so I chose to use a brush-style. Since the request was specifically the Ultra Instinct -Sign- look for Goku, I included the aura in the painting to really bring out the proper atmosphere.


—Were you thinking of a particular scene when it comes to Goku's pose?

I wanted to draw a pose that I hadn't done before, and also give off an impression of divinity. I first tried it with him starting to get into a Kamehameha charging pose, but it didn't seem right. So, I then started with this current pose. At the beginning of the draft, his feet were on the ground. But I changed it because it felt more divine to have him floating.
In the end, it became pretty far removed from a Kamehameha pose. But I think the resulting pose is something mysterious and with a sense of divine calm.


—From the drafting phase to the finishing touches, which part of the production process was the most fun?

I usually like the inking and finishing portions, and those two were true again for this one. I really enjoy filling up a pen with ink and the feeling of drawing a line on paper, so I think that part will always stay analog. Also, the final color work was to add blue reflections and highlights. This part is where everything in the piece suddenly comes together, so I absolutely love it.

Toyotarou on V Jump's Super-Sized May Edition!

—V Jump's Super-Sized May Edition will have the showdown between Ultra Instinct Goku and Gohan Beast. Is there anything that you would like readers to pay attention to in particular?

Goku senses Gohan Beast's Ki
and challenges his son to a match!

I think the focus will be on who is stronger, but there are many other things to keep a look out for, such as each fighter's fighting stance and way of thinking! I hope everyone will read the issue and see it for themselves!


—With the SUPER HERO Arc reaching the climax in V Jump's Super-Sized May Edition, please give us your thoughts now that you've finished making it.

For the prequel chapters (88-90), Toriyama helped to correct and improve upon the ideas I came up with. But after that, the chapters depicting the main story from the movie (chapters 91-100) and the postlude part (chapters 101-103) were all written by Toriyama himself. Although I made some additions to the lines and plot events, it's largely the same as what Toriyama envisioned. I am very grateful to have been able to draw the series in this way. I hope that everyone enjoys this manga version of the SUPER HERO Arc that adds on the events from the film!
