Toyotarou Tried To Draw Special Edition! Toyotarou Talks About His Legends 7th Anniversary Collab Illustration!
The hit mobile game Dragon Ball Legends is celebrating its seventh anniversary! As part of the festivities, a special collab illustration by Toyotarou, co-creator of Dragon Ball Super, will be featured in-game!
During the anniversary campaign, the app's launch screen, in-game backgrounds, Arts Card sleeves, and more will feature this specially drawn illustration from Toyotarou!
This super-special, thrilling illustration features Ultra Instinct Goku and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Evolved) Vegeta side by side, throwing a pair of powerful punches!
Today we're sitting down for an interview with Toyotarou to ask all about this specially drawn collab illustration!

Toyotarou On This Special Collab Illustration!
—Could you tell us a little about what you focused on for this illustration?
When deciding on the poses, I wanted Goku and Vegeta to be able to stand on their own but also give a sense of teamwork when put together. I also wanted to make it look really dynamic, so I had them face the viewer, and gave extra thought to their clothing and facial expressions.
—I can see that both of them have rips and tears in their clothing, so they must have been in some kind of fierce battle. Who were you imagining they were up against?
I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, but since I think the setting is the Tournament of Power, then I guess it must be Jiren. The idea is that they've both transformed after a long battle, so I thought it would make sense for their clothes to have some tears in them.
At this stage, the line art has been colored in and a background has been added.
Goku's torn Uniform and Vegeta's damaged armor really show just how intense their battle was!
—Since this illustration is composed to show that Goku and Vegeta are fighting together, was there anything you kept in mind when drawing these two side by side?
I wanted to keep it from looking too symmetrical, so I lined up their fists vertically instead of being right next to each other. There's also some overlap between one character's fist and the other's body, which helps to add some depth.
—How about the line art and their facial expressions?
Since they're in their Ultra Instinct and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Evolved) forms, I tried to bring out the unique characteristics of each form in their expressions. In particular, this version of Vegeta doesn't exist in the manga, and it was my first time drawing this form. So, I paid close attention to his expression and hairstyle to make sure everything looked natural to fans of the anime.
Toyotarou gave us special permission to show off the line art stage of this illustration!

—How do you feel about your illustration being used on the Legends app launch screen?
It's really an honor to be featured like this on the seventh anniversary. My hope is that this illustration helps to add even more to the appeal of Dragon Ball Legends.
