Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #14: Goku Training Arc's Namu!

Namu - Goku Training Arc -

The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week. This week's character is the stalwart martial artist Namu, who appeared in the Goku Training Arc!

Story

Namu is a stern and pure-hearted young warrior who entered the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, where he advanced through the preliminaries and into the tournament proper.
He entered the tournament with the goal of using the prize money to save his drought-stricken village, promising his people as he left that he would "triumph and bring home vessels overflowing with water".

In the first round, Namu almost fell victim to Lanfan's feminine guiles, but by closing his eyes to block her out, he was able to deliver a finishing blow and emerge victorious.

He then advanced to the semifinals, where he faced Goku. Unfortunately, even his ultimate technique—the Chotenku X-Ji Ken (Aerial Super Cross Attack)—was not enough to defeat the young Saiyan, who landed a kick on Namu as he fell from the sky, which sent him flying out of the ring.

After his defeat, Namu thought he would have to return to his village empty handed, but Kamesennin (disguised as Jackie Chun at the time) was able to sense Namu's plight and intervened! He gave him a Hoipoi Capsule that could be used to shrink a large amount of free well water down to the size of a Senzu Bean to carry home—no heavy "overflowing vessels" required!

Techniques Used

Tenku X-Ji Ken (Aerial Cross Attack)
A technique where the user swoops down from above with their arms crossed in an X shape and delivers a crushing blow to their opponent's throat.
It is said that those unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of this move are knocked out cold for ten whole days, but somehow Goku was able to spring right back up!

Chotenku X-Ji Ken (Aerial Super Cross Attack)
This technique is a super-powered version of the Tenku X-Ji Ken where the user leaps to an astounding height before diving down onto their opponent to maximize its destructive potential.
In Namu's fight against Goku, Goku was able to land a kick on Namu right before he hit the ground while executing this move, meaning it never met its mark in their battle.

Trivia

His Kamesennin disguise is impeccable!

In order to fully convince his students that "Jackie Chun" and Kamesennin were two different people, Kamesennin had Namu put on his clothes and stand in the audience during one of his fights! Namu-sennin even threw up the old master's trademark peace sign for good measure!
