It's based on the concept of a young Gohan going out to play in the forest and finding himself helping out an injured dinosaur. According to Akira Toriyama, there were already too many illustrations of Goku and Gohan riding dinosaurs, so he chose to reverse the idea by having the dinosaur get a ride for once.
