Celebrating the Release of "Dragon Ball Z G×materia THE YAMCHA"! Interview with the Project Leader!!
As that article explains, the shape of Yamcha's eyes and his hairstyle have changed a lot since we first bumped into him in the desert. That's why we took this opportunity to wind back the clocks and revisit the numerous times that Yamcha has thrust himself into battle over the years and the looks that accompany them.
We've all been eagerly awaiting this figure's release, and we're thrilled to say that Miyoshi was kind enough to join us on our little Yamcha-centric trip down memory lane.
Tale 8
When he first appeared in the comics, Yamcha was a no-good scoundrel, robbing people of their valuables and referring to himself as "King Hyena". He wasn't afraid to use his Roga Fufu-ken (Wolf Fang Fist) against his foes back then, and he's been unleashing it in battles ever since.
Miyoshi: This time around we recreated the coolest version of Yamcha, which is from the Saiyan arc, but in terms of his clothing, his early appearances were also super cool!
――The hairstyles are also quite similar, right? Looking at this newest figure's hair, the way it's flowing and its sheer volume, I really get a sense that it was a perfect hairstyle to recreate in 3D.
Miyoshi: To be honest, we actually had quite a bit of trouble figuring out how to do the hair justice for this figure. (laughs)
I guess that's a pretty common problem when it comes to Dragon Ball figures!
Tale 37
Yamcha entered the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai with a clean trim—but only because Bulma had told him he looked super lame with long hair! The pose he struck at the beginning of his fight against Jackie Chun is surely familiar to all the Yamcha fans out there, his right hand clenched in a claw-like position, and it's one that we'd see him use time and time again!
Tale 117
Kamesennin had taken Yamcha on as a disciple by the time he competed in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, and so he was able to make his debut in the iconic Kame School orange jumpsuit. Perhaps he wanted a look that better suited the city, we're not sure, but whatever the case, he's looking stylish with a clean, well-groomed hairstyle.
Tale 166
This panel is taken from a little while before he entered the arena, but his 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai look certainly leaves an impression! This is the first time we started to see the scars on his face, and there's definitely something different about his eyes...
Miyoshi: I really like his outfit here when they finally all meet up again.
――Personally, I'm quietly hoping that this sort of Yamcha gets given a figure at some point.
Miyoshi: I'd also love to try recreating this outfit in 3D.
――Well, if you get the chance, I know you'd sell at least one figure!
Tale 175
At the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Yamcha showed off the results of his training by firing off some new, super powerful moves. Sadly, that wasn't enough to emerge victorious against Shen, whose body had been taken over by Kami. Combine that with the fact that at the previous two tournaments he faced the eventual winner in the very first round, and one can't help but feel a little sorry for Yamcha and his terrible luck.
Miyoshi: For me personally, I really like Yamcha's look around the time of this fight, when he had his hair tied back.
――It's super cool.
Miyoshi: Agreed. I love the part where he fires a Sokidan and has it shoot up from underground.
――You really get a sense that he's been training hard.
Miyoshi: Even though in the end he loses...!
――Even when he loses, I still think Yamcha is great!
Tale 215
Next up, the Saiyan arc! When he lets his hair down, he's almost indistinguishable from the wild Yamcha we saw in his desert bandit days. During the epic fight that ensues, his love of battle shows on his face more than a few times.
Miyoshi: So this new figure's design was based on Yamcha from this era, but we spent a lot of time getting the facial expression just right. We took Yamcha's face from this era and tried to encapsulate the expression he does when he lets loose a Roga Fufu-Ken (Wolf Fang Fist), where one of his eyes opens slightly wider than the other and he raises one eyebrow.
――His facial expression is absolutely awesome! In the early days, his eyes were rounder, but when it gets to this point, they're distinctly sharper.
Tale 338
When Yamcha learned about the Androids' attack from Trunks, his long hair was similar to the style with which he entered the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, but as he headed into battle, it was shorter than it had ever been—perhaps he cut it as a way to get himself pumped up!
Tale 515
And finally, even though he's not heading into a fight, we couldn't go without showing Yamcha's appearance 10 years after the fight with Majin Buu came to its dramatic conclusion!
Miyoshi: I love the way he looks for his final appearance too, with his long hair tied back.
――It's a shame this panel wasn't bigger, but he's looking like one cool customer nonetheless.
All of Yamcha's legendary coolness has been condensed into one must-have figure—"Dragon Ball Z G×materia THE YAMCHA"!
Be sure to check it out at your local game center!!
