Volume 18 of the Dragon Ball Super manga will be released in Japan on April 4! To get you caught up with the story so far, let's jump all the way back to the beginning of Dragon Ball Super, which picks up after the defeat of Majin Buu, and go over all the major plot points and developments in the manga to date!
Sometime after the final showdown against Majin Buu in Dragon Ball, Goku was training on the Planet of the Kaio when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with Beerus, the God of Destruction! They had a sparring match, but Goku was clearly unworthy of his divine opponent, who was able to send Goku hurtling backwards with the mere flick of his finger! He then descended upon Earth with Whis, his angelic attendant, with the objective of investigating the existence of the "Super Saiyan God".
Vegeta and the other heroes of Earth were no match for the God of Destruction, and when all hope was lost and our world was on the brink of annihilation, Goku learned the secret of Super Saiyan God from Shenron and succeeded in completing the transformation! With the object of his obsession now before his eyes, Beerus engaged Super Saiyan God Goku in single combat for the fate of Planet Earth!
Unfortunately, even the powered up Goku was unable to withstand Beerus' godly might...!
The Earth was saved, however, as when Goku mustered up his full strength and fired a colossal Kamehameha, Beerus recognized the Saiyan's great potential and found it in his divine grace to postpone the planet's destruction for another time.
Following Goku's battle with Lord Beerus, he and Vegeta ended up training under Whis and attained a new form even more powerful than Super Saiyan God—Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan! Around the same time, Universe 7 was paid a visit by Universe 6's God of Destruction, Champa.
It turned out that Universe 6 has its own version of Saiyans and Frieza's race, and when an argument broke out between Beerus and Champa, the latter proposed that the matter ought to be settled by pitting their respective universe's greatest warriors against each other in a martial arts tournament!
The ensuing bouts were filled to the brim with exciting twists and turns, including a Saiyan vs Saiyan showdown and a disqualification over the use of a prohibited weapon, until Universe 6 was down to their final contender: the assassin Hit! Skillfully utilizing his Time Skip ability that allows him to jump 0.1 seconds into the future, Hit fought an incredible back-and-forth battle against Goku. In the end, however, Hit decided to throw in the towel for reasons of his own and put their duel on ice for the time being.
When Trunks returned to his future and defeated the Androids in Dragon Ball, he likely never imagined that the next menace to plunge his world into darkness and destruction would be Goku—Goku Black, that is! In Dragon Ball Super, Trunks traveled back to the main timeline's present to tell everyone about this mysterious new threat.
As events transpired, we soon find out that the true identity of Goku Black was actually the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, Zamasu! Looking down upon mortals as primitive beasts and a blight upon existence, he had colluded with his counterpart from a different timeline to execute "The Zero Mortal Project", a diabolical plot to exterminate all mortal life by any means necessary.
Trunks returned to his future with Goku and Vegeta in tow, and the three fought an epic struggle against Zamasu and Goku Black for the fate of all mortals! Over the course of their battles, Goku Black gained the ability to transform into Super Saiyan Rosé, and later on Zamasu and Goku Black fused with the Potara to create a single being of astonishing power. Goku and Vegeta responded in kind by using Potara to fuse into Vegito!
The heroes fought valiantly in an arduous battle, but the immortal Zamasu remained undefeated even after his body was worn down by Vegito's relentless onslaught and rent asunder by a final swing of Trunks' sword. When hope was all but lost, Goku had the idea to call upon the lord of all universes, Zeno, who then erased not only Zamasu but the entirety of Trunks' future timeline from reality.
Trunks had lost his home, but with hope in his heart he decided to use the time machine to travel to a new future timeline before Zamasu's terrible plot took place and try once more to create a peaceful world.
Thanks to a bright idea from Goku posed to Zeno, it was decided that the "Tournament of Power" would be held—a battle royal between the universes with the lowest mortal levels where there would be only one survivor! The representative warriors from Universe 7 were Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Android 17, Android 18, Tenshinhan, Mutenroshi, and a wildcard who no one expected would be defending the universe for a change, Frieza!
As the furious battle royal raged on and universes were dropping like flies, Goku eventually came face-to-face with Universe 11's greatest warrior, Jiren! He was soundly defeated by Jiren during their first encounter in the Tournament of Power, but when it came time for their rematch, he had unlocked Ultra Instinct—a new form that allowed his body to react automatically to dodge any and all attacks coming his way!!
Goku looked like he might come out on top, but then his Ultra Instinct was nullified by Jiren's transformation into his full power form! Vegeta joined the fight to try and overcome Jiren by working together with Goku, but the two Saiyans were powerless against Jiren's unfathomable strength and pushed to the precipice of elimination!
Just when Universe 7 was all but doomed, none other than Frieza appeared out of nowhere and charged at Jiren, sacrificing himself to push the final Universe 11 fighter out of bounds along with Goku! For a brief moment it looked like there were no warriors left in the arena from any universe, until from under the rubble stood Android 17, who had been feigning defeat all along!
Universe 7 had won, and the remaining universes that competed in the Tournament of Power were erased from existence.
...However, Android 17 used his prize for winning the tournament, a wish from the Super Dragon Balls, to bring all the other universes back!
Some time had passed following the climax of the Tournament of Power when a new source of chaos broke out in the universe: "Planet-Eater" Moro, an ancient villain who had destroyed and consumed countless worlds, had escaped from the Galactic Prison! To put him back behind bars, a member of the Galactic Patrol named Merus turned to Goku and Vegeta for their assistance.
Despite their best efforts, Moro manages to use New Planet Namek's Dragon Balls to restore himself to his full power, and on top of that he also wishes for all prisoners interned in the Galactic Prison to be set free! Left with no other choice, Goku and Vegeta are forced to retreat and regroup to plan their next move.
Seeking out more planets to consume for their energy, Moro and his army of prisoners set their sights on Earth! Standing between Moro and the Earth's demise were Goku, Vegeta, the other heroes of Earth, and the Galactic Patrol. Goku and Vegeta had been training to prepare for their rematch with the planet-eater, and even though Vegeta arrived a little late to the party, they were able to overwhelm him with their incredible new abilities!!
The insidious villain wasn't finished yet, however, as he sacrificed his own underlings to absorb their power and regain his footing! Merus stepped forward to try and stop Moro, but since Merus was actually one of the Angels and therefore forbidden from participating in conflicts by their code, he was erased. Goku then took Merus' place in the battle against Moro, where he finally managed to harness perfected Ultra Instinct!!
Moro was unable to contend with Goku's Ultra Instinct, and as a last resort attempted to fuse with the planet itself! Goku's energy was absorbed just like the first time he faced defeat at the hands of Moro, but this time his friends as well as an unexpected ally gave him their energy, allowing him to activate Ultra Instinct once more! And then with a final, mighty blow, Goku was able to defeat Moro once and for all!!
After the dust had settled, New Planet Namek's Dragon Balls were used to resurrect all who had been killed by Moro and heal the planets that he damaged, allowing the universe to breathe a sigh of peaceful relief once more.
Granolah is a Cerealian bounty hunter living on Planet Cereal with an elder Namekian named Monaito. Forty years ago, Planet Cereal was ravaged by the Frieza Force and a group of Saiyans under their command, instilling within Granolah a deep-seated hatred for both Frieza and the Saiyan race.
One day, Granolah learned that Frieza had been resurrected! Seeing that his chance at avenging his home and his people was finally at hand, he sought out the Cerealian Dragon Balls and wished to become the strongest warrior in the universe at the cost of dramatically reducing his own lifespan!
The source of Granolah's bounty work was the Heeters, an organization led by a man named Elec that employed bounty hunters and assassins to do their dirty work in the shadows of the universe. In truth, Elec was plotting to seize control of the universe, and so when he learned of Granolah's miraculous new power, he saw an obstacle in his path to be eliminated. He was also wary of Goku and Vegeta, whom he'd heard had defeated Moro, so he devised a plot to have Granolah fight the two Saiyans—hopefully to their mutual demise!
With Elec and the Heeters pulling the strings, Goku and Vegeta ended up on Planet Cereal, where Granolah was waiting, and an explosive battle broke out between the two sides!
Granolah used his Cerealian ability of pinpointing his opponent's weak spots to devastating effect against Goku at first, but had the tables turned on him when Goku activated his newly refined Ultra Instinct! Vegeta also unveiled his new Ultra Ego form, a transformation attained through his training with Lord Beerus!!
During their epic battle, Granolah slowly learned to harness the incredible power at his fingertips and was eventually able to defeat both Goku and Vegeta! But right when he was about to finish off Vegeta with a full-power energy blast, Monaito intervened to stop him. He went on to tell Granolah the truth about what happened forty years ago—that it was not the Saiyans with whom he should be seeking vengeance...!
Just what could Monaito's shocking revelation about the past of Planet Cereal be?!
In Volume 18, releasing in Japan on April 4, the truth about the Frieza Force's invasion of Planet Cereal four decades ago is revealed!
What will happen when the Heeters finally get their hands dirty in the fight against Goku and Vegeta? And what is the ace up Elec's sleeve to defeat the strongest warrior in the universe?!
Don't miss all the exciting developments in this tempestuous battle as they unfold in Volume 18!
