The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week. The featured character this week is none other than Shen!

Story

Shen is actually Kami in a human body that he borrowed to defeat Piccolo (calling himself "Majunior" or Demon Junior). His appearance is that of a regular old man, but don't let that fool you! Kami retains all of his power even as Shen, meaning he's still exceedingly strong.

In the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Shen took down Yajirobe in the preliminaries to advance to the finals. There he faced Yamcha, who unleashed his new Sokidan technique, but Shen was undeterred and knocked him out of the arena with a single strike, securing his victory.

In his semifinal match against Piccolo, Shen's attempt to seal the reborn Demon King in a tiny jar using the Mafu-ba was turned back against him, and Shen was the one who ended up being sealed.

Techniques

Shockwave

Shen released a shockwave with the flick of his fingers that sent Piccolo flying.

Mafu-ba

The Mafu-ba is a technique created by Kamesennin's master, Mutaito, in order to seal away Great Demon King Piccolo. The user releases energy from both hands to trap the opponent and force them into a container, then seals them inside with a talisman.

Trivia

Shen's name comes from the Japanese kanji for Kami, which is also used in the kanji for Shenron!

Kami adopted the name when he borrowed an old man's body to enter the Tenkaichi Budokai, and since in Japanese "Shen" is another pronunciation for the kanji character for "Kami", Goku was able to figure out his true identity!
