The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week. This time, we're sharing the dossier of a dastardly little villain with big ambitions: Pilaf from the Goku Training Arc!
Pilaf is the leader of the Pilaf Gang, a trio of troublemakers with an enormous castle that serves as their headquarters.
The gang steals Goku and Bulma's Dragon Balls in an attempt to use them to realize their dream of world domination.
(Tale 18)
Goku and the others infiltrate the castle HQ in order to reclaim their stolen Dragon Balls but soon fall victim to a trap, finding themselves prisoners of Pilaf.
Seeking to discern the location of the final Dragon Ball, Pilaf interrogates Bulma and threatens to do "something nasty" to her should she refuse to cooperate. However, the terrible consequence of defying Pilaf turns out to be nothing more than him blowing Bulma a harmless, somewhat bashful kiss, which has no effect on her at all!
In the end, the Pilaf Gang simply douses the group in sleeping gas and takes the Four-Star Dragon Ball off Goku's unconscious body.
(Tale 19)
With all seven Dragon Balls collected, Pilaf summons Shenron and is on the verge of having his wish of world domination granted when Oolong bursts in at the last second to make his own wish!
(Tale 20)
Pilaf then interns Goku and his friends inside a solid steel cell to await their grim punishment.
The cell is thought to be impenetrable and inescapable—until Goku gets a look at the full moon through the glass ceiling, that is!
Goku transforms into a Great Ape, breaking through not only the cell but the entire castle above it too! The Pilaf Gang attempts to flee from Goku's rampage in an airplane but are struck by a piece of castle rubble that he hurled at them and are forced to crash land.
(Tale 22)
"Dragon Ball" Tale 18
He isn't a fan of dirty jokes!
Pilaf scolds Mai for a crass gag she makes while the gang are looking for the final Dragon Ball, breaking the fourth wall and saying that considering the many readers of Shonen Jump, they'd best avoid doing anything shameful or scandalous.
(Tale 19)
→Preview: Next week's character is one of Pilaf's trusted underlings!
