The Weekly ☆ Character Showcase is an article series where we introduce one character from the Dragon Ball universe each week.
This time, we're meeting the stylish cyborg known as Android 17!
Android 17 is a half-human, half-machine created by the evil scientist Dr. Gero.
Android 18 is actually his twin sister, and when they were still regular humans their names were Lapis and Lazuli.
Both are fitted with perpetual energy reactors, meaning they have effectively infinite stamina.
(Tale 349)
The twin androids spend a long time in stasis as punishment for refusing to obey Dr. Gero's orders.
However, they are eventually reactivated by their master, "Android 20" at the time, who is left with no other choice after being cornered by Vegeta and the others.
At first it seems like Android 17 has learned his lesson and that he will obey Dr. Gero's commands, but it turns out that this is only a ploy to get his hands on the remote that can be used to deactivate him again. With the tables turned and no way for him to be put back into stasis, Android 17 mercilessly destroys his creator and former master.
(Tale 350)
He and Android 18 then go on to activate Android 16, and together the three set out on their journey to locate Goku.
17 shows his incredible strength again when he quickly disposes of Trunks, who had cut in on Android 18's duel against Vegeta, and he is also able to easily deal with both Tenshinhan and Piccolo.
(Tale 355)
The Androids eventually make it to Goku's house only to find him missing, and so instead they set off toward Kame House.
Along the way they encounter Piccolo again, except this time he has powered up immensely by fusing with Kami.
Android 17 engages the Namekian, but during their battle First Form Cell suddenly appears and absorbs him.
(Tale 372)
It seems that Android 17 might be lost for good after Cell is destroyed by Gohan during the Cell games, but he is later resurrected with the power of the Dragon Balls.

Barrier
This technique can protect its user from a multitude of attacks. Android 17 uses his Barrier to great effect in his battle against Piccolo, where he renders himself untouchable by the innumerable Ki Blasts that Piccolo fires at him.
(Tale 367)
Android 18
Android 17 enjoys taking his sweet time finding Goku!
When you think about it, there is really no reason for the Androids to search for Goku by driving around in a car—they can fly, after all! Android 17 prefers to take the scenic route and enjoy the ride. Android 18, on the other hand, thinks 17's road trip idea is childish and a waste of time.

→Preview: Next week's character gets along surprisingly well with Android 17!
